Halloween Sales

Halloween sales for 2008 are expected to reach $5.77 billion, up 14 percent from last year, according to the National Retail Federation's annual Halloween Consumer Intentions and Actions Survey. Consumers will be spending an average of $66.54 on Halloween. (up from $64.82 last year)

Retailers To Display Halloween Early

Halloween decor is still trending up, often displayed with seasonal fall merchandise. Look for displays, discounts and promotions to creep into the "Back-to-School" season. In '08 Halloween falls on a Friday, which means more parties for both adults and children.

The boom in Halloween business continues to grow each year, and is the second-biggest decorating holiday of the year - behind Christmas.

Decor Style

A whimsical take on traditional Halloween icons will dominate party style with slime green, orange, blues and purples coloring the tablescape. Bats, cats, witches, ghosts, and jack-o-lanterns take center stage.

Vintage-inspired retro trends continue in Halloween decor. The aged look of vintage postcards influenced Halloween 2005-2007, and remains to haunt 2008.

Large scale, motion, lights and sounds - Look for an increase in life-sized, realistic Halloween figures in '08 to scare up fun both indoors and out.

Skulls- Look for skulls to cover everything from tabletop decor to yard-art. Decor themes for Halloween are taking their cue from fashion and pop culture. An increase in pampering and gift giving has fueled the pet products industry as more pet parents continue to treat their pets like members of the family. Look for Halloween pet portraits, costume contests, and pet parades.

It is estimated that $43.4 billion will be spent on our pets in the U.S. in 2008. In 2007, $41.2 billion was spent on our pets in the U.S. Total pet spending in 2006 was $38.5 billion. More than three-and-a-half million Americans purchased Halloween products for their pets in '06 according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association. According to APPMA, pet owners spend an average of $17 per gift- that equates to $59.5 million on Halloween products for pets.

Halloween pet products include costumes, Halloween shaped baked and frosted treats, catnip filled pumpkins, candy corn squeaky toys, designer Halloween pet carriers, edible rawhide Halloween cards, and illuminated collars and leads.

Yard Art

The trend towards realism expands for 2008. Graveyard scenes and haunted houses will set the mood, with fog machines and strobe-lights enhancing the eery effect. Look for bubbling cauldrons, window covers, animated figures, plenty of hanging creatures and features, and lighted Halloween icons.
