Nautical Decor 2006
Beach style offers a refreshing change. The hot and surprisingly hip theme is the beach/coastal movement. What began two years ago as a spotlight on coral, and later branching out into shells, now has morphed to include almost every aspect of life by sea.
Coral motif and shell-encrusted accessories continue to top the list of introductions, but there is much more to this rapidly expanding trend. Seahorses, model ships, palm icons, nautical designs - you name it. This far-reaching trend has a look for everyone, whether for a vacation home or primary residence.
Inspirations range from nostalgic '20s French Riviera and rugged Americana-style sailing to rustic seaside retreat and hippie-chic '70s. This informal look borrows from last season's staples with shells and coral adding embellishment to everything from soft-goods and lighting to furniture.
Coastal has penetrated every category, making it an easy choice for either a fully coordinated look or providing a "pop" with a few accents.
Sky blue, sea green, and sandy beige paired with bleached and limed wood finishes for a white-washed effect. Soft blue and green are especially popular choices in soft goods for the bedroom where a tranquil environment is desired. Add a crisp tailored look by incorporating navy with white, soften the look with a powder blue. Not only is the look inspired by U.S. beaches, Mediterranean looks appear using soft green finishes and worn gold accents.
